How to convert WebP to PNG

  1. Drop WebP files

Open SnapShrink and drop one or more .webp files onto the drop zone — or browse to select them. No account required.

  2. Select PNG output

Set the output format to PNG. Encoding runs in your browser via a Web Worker so the page stays responsive.

  3. Download or ZIP

Download each PNG, or grab the whole batch as a ZIP. Your WebP originals never leave the device — verify with DevTools → Network if you want proof. Details on the privacy page.

When you need PNG instead of WebP

WebP is excellent for modern websites, but it is not universal yet. Convert WebP to PNG when:

  • Old CMS or portal uploads reject .webp and only accept PNG or JPEG
  • Email clients or design tools cannot open or preview WebP reliably
  • Archival or handoff requires a lossless, widely supported still
  • Transparency matters and the destination expects a PNG alpha channel

PNG is lossless and nearly everywhere. That compatibility is why people still convert WebP back to PNG even when the WebP file was smaller.

Batch convert WebP to PNG

Have a folder of WebP assets from a CDN export or design handoff? Multi-select them, set output to PNG, and download one ZIP when the batch finishes. Same settings apply across the stack so naming stays consistent for your theme or brand kit.

For larger folder workflows, see the bulk image compressor page. Going the other direction — PNG or JPG to WebP — lives on the WebP converter.

WebP vs PNG: quality and size

PNG files are usually larger than an equivalent WebP at similar visual appearance. That is the tradeoff for lossless storage and broader software support. Converting WebP → PNG does not magically restore detail that a lossy WebP encode already discarded; it packages the decoded pixels into a lossless PNG container.

If your destination accepts WebP and you care about page weight, keep WebP or convert to WebP with the PNG/JPG → WebP converter. Use this page when compatibility forces PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Is WebP to PNG conversion free?

Yes for the first 10 images per browser session. Unlimited conversion is a one-time $9 Pro license — no subscription.

Does converting WebP to PNG lose quality?

WebP to PNG is safe for further loss: PNG is lossless. You do not add a second lossy encode. Any detail already discarded when the WebP was created cannot be restored.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Conversion runs locally in your browser. There are no file uploads to SnapShrink servers. See the privacy policy.

Can I convert multiple WebP files at once?

Yes. Drop a folder or multi-select WebP files, set output to PNG, and download the batch as a ZIP. The first 10 images per session are free. More batch context: bulk image compressor.

Why not just keep WebP?

Compatibility. Some CMS platforms, email clients, design tools, and portals still reject WebP. PNG is widely accepted when you need a universal still.

Can I convert PNG to WebP instead?

Yes. Use the WebP converter for PNG and JPG to WebP — the reverse direction of this tool. Open SnapShrink and set output to WebP.
